We’re are at the half year point, and we have looked at resilience in terms of city design, city budget prioritization, the effect of digital, social and print media portrayal in supporting a community’s resilience or not; and last month we looked at the effect of poorly conceived public transportation, including road design and the traumatic effects that has had on a community like Greater Mattapan.

This month, we are looking at the importance of ensuring that the open land/environment and making development decisions in urban areas, like Greater Mattapan to ensure that we are putting first the health and well-being of our residents and the importance of the created space to not be in contradiction to that end.

In 2004, Mayor Menino’s Green Building Task Force published an Executive Summary Report, to help others understand and attain the same benefits of green building, whether a homeowner or business decision-maker. The model he used was the George Robert White Nature Center – Boston’s first municipal green building. One of the members of that Task Force was Kirk Sykes, AIA, the lead architect.

    I. Presentation: Kirk Sykes, is the Managing Director of Accordia Partners, LLC, a Boston based real estate investment and development company. He also serves on the Boston Civic Design Commission and is the Real Estate Executive Council Chairman for the Initiative for a Competitive Inner City. Sykes was formerly the head of an urban real estate investment fund called Urban Strategy America Fund, L.P. He was the Chairman of The Federal Reserve Bank of Boston Board and the founder of the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston External Diversity Advisory Board. He is also a member of the steering committee formed by Mayor Wu to examine and advise on reforms to the BPDA’s Article 80 process for project approvals.

His professional training and hands-on experience in the areas of finance, investment, development, design and construction to create customized responses to the complex issues of urban real estate development may provide deeper insights into which questions we should be asking as a community to continuously to ensure the best possible outcomes to protect open space, our homes and our health – ultimately a healthy community that does not displace those who currently live here.
